Describe the problem

Haverhill and nearby places.

Who should you contact?

Check who can authorise the work. A landlord, utility, council or emergency service may be the right first contact. This enquiry form is not an emergency dispatch service. Local reporting contacts are below; this enquiry service does not provide emergency dispatch.

Outside drain blocked

Useful details for your enquiry

Do not lift heavy covers or enter the drainage system to gather information.

  • The outlet type: roof-water gully, patio channel, wastewater chamber or roadside drain.
  • What water enters it and when drainage fails.
  • Photos taken from a safe distance, if you have them.

Outside drain overflowing

Keep clear of escaping water and identify whether it followed rain, fixture use or continuous flow. Describe the emergence point and take photographs only from safe ground. Sewage and surface-water routes may need different organisations; do not assume every outside overflow is a private blockage.

The Sturmer Road Haverhill report investigates rainfall on 25 July 2021 and was published on 28 September 2021. It considered runoff, road drainage, Stour Brook and some private septic systems in its study area. This historical example shows why the complete water route matters; it does not establish today's cause or risk at your address.

Outside drain smells

Report whether the smell comes from a wastewater chamber, a rainwater outlet or standing water nearby. The source matters more than the label outside drain. Ask for diagnosis before commissioning cleaning, particularly when there is no slow flow or visible blockage.

Standing water around an outside drain

Record the pattern

Record only from a safe place. An obstruction, limited capacity and surface levels need different solutions.

  • Does pooling follow every shower or only intense rain?
  • How far does the water spread, and how long does it remain?
  • Does it appear around the drain or run in from elsewhere?

Leaves blocking an outside drain

If the grate is safely accessible, remove loose leaves at the surface without opening heavy covers or putting hands into the drain. Repeated ponding after that needs an outlet and levels assessment. Collect leaves for suitable disposal rather than wash them deeper into the system.

For Haverhill and nearby villages, first confirm who maintains the opening. A roadside gully is different from a patio channel. Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire have separate highway reporting routes, while a private garden system needs its owner's authority. Being beside your frontage does not mean the gully is yours to alter.

Mud and silt blocking drains

Silt can collect where soil washes onto paving or construction disturbs the ground. Tell the contractor about recent landscaping and the upstream surface. Ask how removed material will be handled and whether reducing the source of runoff is part of the recommended solution.

Patio drain blocked

Explain where the patio drains to and whether water pools after every shower or only intense rain. A channel clean and a change to patio levels are different jobs. Ask for the suspected restriction or design issue to be established before agreeing to alterations.

Driveway drain blocked

What to tell the drainage company

Confirm the cause and discharge arrangements before adding channels; agree reinstatement if paving must be disturbed.

  • The driveway surface and drain position.
  • When water pools and how long it lasts.
  • Any vehicle-access requirements.

Channel drain blocked

A visible channel may have removable grates, but safe access and its manufacturer's maintenance instructions matter. Keeping the surface clear will not resolve a blocked underground outlet. Ask whether the quoted visit covers the whole run or just the channel.

Gully drain blocked

A blocked gully can be a local debris problem, but a clear grate with standing water may indicate a blocked outlet, inadequate falls or downstream conditions. Tell the assessor whether it takes roof, garden or road water and whether other drains surcharge. Do not remove a cover where traffic, depth or contamination makes it unsafe.

Report Suffolk highway gullies through the county route; for the Sturmer/Bumpstead area use Essex Highways, and for the Camps/Horseheath area use Cambridgeshire. Confirm the actual road and maintenance status. Those routes do not replace an Anglian Water report for a suspected public sewer problem.

Rainwater drain blocked

Check whether symptoms start at the gutter, downpipe, gully or further downstream. Work at height requires appropriate help. Rainwater may discharge to a sewer or other arrangement; do not assume the route or connect it to a different pipe without checking requirements.

Surface water drainage problems

A drainage proposal needs the whole route: contributing surfaces, levels, storage, infiltration or lawful outfall and a route when rainfall exceeds design capacity. A channel at the edge of paving does not solve the problem if there is nowhere suitable for its water to go. Ask what investigation supports the design and how it protects thresholds and neighbours.

Haverhill's 2021 Sturmer Road study illustrates interactions between runoff, drainage and local levels. It is historical and site-specific; do not infer a universal soakaway design or current risk from it. Confirm actual ground conditions and discharge permission before commissioning works, with the appropriate district, county and utility involved where necessary.

Garden flooding caused by drainage

Record whether water runs in from elsewhere, rises near a drain or collects across the garden. Use the government's flood-risk information as context, not a diagnosis of your individual property. Do not divert or pump water onto neighbours' land, a road or a sewer without appropriate advice.

A garden that becomes wet during heavy rain needs an assessment of where the water originates. Water may arrive from elsewhere, collect because of levels or fail to leave through an existing drainage route. Record the timing and visible direction of flow from a safe place; a photograph of standing water alone does not identify the cause.

Before agreeing to a new drain or soakaway, establish the existing discharge arrangement and what the proposed work is intended to change. Do not treat an excavation quotation as proof that its proposed outlet is appropriate. Avoid diverting the problem onto neighbouring land, a highway or a sewer without the necessary advice and permissions.

Soakaway problems

Quick answer

Clearing a pipe feeding a soakaway and designing a replacement soakaway are different tasks. Establish the existing arrangement and evidence of failure before excavation.

How to clean an outside drain

Limit homeowner work to safe surface maintenance on your own accessible fittings. Avoid unknown chambers, sewage, heavy covers and the highway. If removing loose debris does not restore flow, request an assessment rather than escalating to improvised rods, chemicals or excavation.

Who is responsible for an outside drain?

Position is not enough to identify responsibility. A private rainwater channel, an adopted sewer in a garden, a roadside gully and a watercourse may sit close together but have different owners and reporting routes. Identify what the opening receives and where it discharges, then confirm with the relevant organisation before paying for alterations.

Our Haverhill-centred enquiry area crosses three counties. Use Suffolk for relevant Haverhill highway drainage, Essex for Braintree-side road assets and Cambridgeshire for the Camps/Horseheath side. Anglian Water handles concerns about its sewer network. Private off-mains systems need their own ownership and maintenance arrangements; no single council can be assumed responsible for every enquiry.
